I recently had the opportunity to complete a captivating cosmetic chemistry course at UCLA, and let me tell you, it was eye-opening! Despite my extensive training and education, I must admit that I’m still susceptible to clever marketing tactics. However, armed with knowledge about what qualifies as “natural” or “organic” in the cosmetic world (remember, FDA-regulated, not USDA), I feel empowered and well-informed.
Let’s talk about sunscreen (remember, there are no sunblocks!). When we evaluate sunscreen’s effectiveness through its “sun protection factor” (SPF), it’s crucial to apply approximately one ounce or about three fingers’ worth. Impressive, right? Recently, a fellow esthetician friend and I were discussing how truly effective sunscreen requires a two-step process. First, you need a base sunscreen that you generously slather on, and then you can follow up with a color “make-up” sunscreen (which some people mistakenly believe provides enough coverage). It’s almost like building a well-curated “sunscreen wardrobe” (and I’m not just talking about your underwear). I highly recommend trying out Lira tinted sunscreen—it’s fantastic for that initial slathering step.
The problem with sun damage is that it’s not immediately apparent. When you’re blessed with youthful, baby-like skin, it can be easy to brush off a little rosy hue as harmless. But here’s the truth: without sunscreen, the older generation can attest to dealing with unwelcome dark spots (melanin), loss of elasticity (wrinkles), and even skin cancer. Trust me, relying on the wisdom of our elders wasn’t exactly my cup of tea when I was in my forever-young phase.
But now you know…..
Do your best.
For your healthiest skin,
